What these numbers mean

A phase is an exact moment, not a day: the new moon is the instant the Moon and Sun share the same ecliptic longitude, the full moon the instant they are 180 degrees apart. We give that instant in UTC and your browser converts it, which is why a full moon can fall on different dates in Tokyo and Los Angeles.

The distance is centre to centre at the moment of the phase. A full moon within about 360,000 km is close to perigee and looks a little larger; the press calls it a supermoon. One beyond 405,000 km is near apogee, a micromoon. The difference to the eye is small, the difference in the tides is not.

The Moon is void of course from its last exact major aspect to a planet (conjunction, sextile, square, trine or opposition, Sun to Pluto) until it enters the next sign. Traditional astrologers avoid starting things in those hours. The periods here follow that classical definition; some modern astrologers also count the outer planets, which we do, or exclude them, which gives shorter voids.
