Gemini is the third sign of the tropical zodiac, the thirty degrees the Sun crosses in the month before the June solstice. That month is the end of spring in the Northern Hemisphere and the end of autumn in the Southern. Astrologers count Gemini as an air sign and a mutable sign, one of the four that close a season, and the tradition makes Mercury its ruling planet.

This page is for people born with the Sun in Gemini and for anyone curious about the sign. It separates what can be checked from what is interpreted: the dates and the stars are astronomy, and the descriptions of temperament report how astrologers have read Gemini for more than two thousand years.

The sky

In 2026 the Sun entered Gemini on 21 May 2026 at 00:37 UTC and left it on 21 June 2026 at 08:25 UTC. The cusp moves almost six hours later every year, because the year of the seasons is that much longer than a 365-day calendar, and a leap day pulls it back: in 2028 the Sun enters Gemini on 20 May 2028 at 12:10 UTC. Time zones shift it again, and in New York the 2026 entry still fell on the evening before.

The sign is defined by the seasons, not by the stars. Earth's axis slowly wobbles, and since the zodiac was fixed the constellation Gemini has drifted about 24 degrees from the sign, so for nearly all of the Gemini weeks the Sun now stands in front of the stars of Taurus. As for the ruling planet, Mercury usually crosses Gemini in two to three weeks, but in 2028 it turns retrograde inside the sign and stays for 69 days. Astrologers read a Mercury retrograde as a time for rechecking plans and messages.

Character

Astrologers describe Gemini as the most curious sign of the zodiac. In the tradition's picture you collect information the way other people collect objects, and you are rarely bored as long as there is something new to read or someone new to talk to. When the train is late, the Gemini response is to start a conversation with the person in the next seat or to finish an article saved weeks ago.

The tradition reads Mercury as the planet of language and trade, and the sign's symbol, the twins, gives it a second theme, doubleness. Astrologers say Gemini can hold two opinions at once and argue either side well, which makes for good conversation and sometimes for confusion about where you actually stand. The same speed can leave a friend feeling that you were only half listening.

With a blank page you tend to start fast, and a second idea usually arrives before the first is done. Astrologers picture a desk with several documents open and all of them half written. Compliments land best when they are about something clever you said, and you may answer one with a joke rather than a thank-you.

Strengths

  • Quick learning
  • Conversation with almost anyone
  • Ease with changing plans
  • A light touch with words

Blind spots

  • Scattered attention
  • Unfinished projects
  • Talking around feelings

In love

In love the tradition describes Gemini as needing conversation first. You are likely to be drawn to someone who makes you think, and a good first date, in the astrologers' picture, is one where the conversation is still going when the cafe closes. Messages through the day matter to the sign, and so does a partner who does not mind a change of plan.

The difficulty the tradition names is staying with a feeling long enough to say it plainly. You may talk around a problem, or turn it into a joke, when the other person wants a direct answer. Astrologers say Gemini does best with a partner who is curious too and who reads restlessness as a need for variety rather than as a lack of commitment.

At work

At work astrologers link Gemini with anything that moves information, such as writing, teaching, sales and the kind of coordinating role where someone has to know who to ask. In meetings you are often the one who connects two people who should have met months ago. You tend to be good at the briefing and the pitch, and less patient with the twelfth revision of the same document.

The tradition ties these themes to the sign's ruler. The English astrologer William Lilly, writing in the seventeenth century, listed merchants, clerks, schoolmasters and poets among the people signified by Mercury. The risk astrologers name is starting three projects and finishing one, and they suggest pairing the sign with someone who enjoys finishing.

The body

In the old scheme that maps the zodiac onto the body from head to feet, Gemini rules the hands, arms and lungs. The Roman poet Manilius gave the arms to the Twins, and astrologers have long linked the paired parts of the body with the sign's symbol. Late medieval almanacs drew the twins beside the arms of the zodiac man. The scheme is symbolic, and nothing here is health advice.

With other signs

Gemini and Sagittarius. Sagittarius is the opposite sign, and the tradition reads the pair as two kinds of curiosity. Gemini wants to know a little about everything, while Sagittarius wants to know what it all means. They can talk for hours, and friction tends to come when one wants the details and the other the big picture.

Gemini and Libra. Libra is another air sign, and astrologers count it as easy company for Gemini. Both enjoy people and talk, so a dinner party or a long walk with a friend tends to go well. The weak point is decisions, because neither likes to close off options.

Gemini and Virgo. Virgo is three signs from Gemini, a square, although the tradition gives both signs to Mercury. Gemini gathers ideas and Virgo sorts them, so one partner's open browser tabs can turn into the other's to-do list. It works when both see that as a division of labor.

The myth

The twins are Castor and Pollux, whom the Greeks also called the Dioscuri. In the version the poet Pindar tells, they had different fathers: their mother Leda, wife of King Tyndareus of Sparta, bore Pollux to Zeus and Castor to her mortal husband, so Pollux was immortal and Castor was not. The brothers did everything together. Castor was known as a tamer of horses and Pollux as a boxer, and both sailed with Jason on the Argo.

A quarrel over cattle with their cousins Idas and Lynceus ended with Castor killed by a spear. Pollux, grieving, asked Zeus to let him die as well. Zeus offered him a choice: to live forever on Olympus alone, or to share his immortality with his brother, the two of them spending half their days beneath the earth and half in heaven. Pollux chose to share, and later writers say the brothers were set in the sky together.

The constellation

From the Northern Hemisphere, Gemini is best seen in the February evening sky, to the upper left of Orion, where two stars of nearly equal brightness mark the twins' heads. The brighter is Pollux, an orange giant about 34 light-years away, although the traditional Greek-letter labels make Castor alpha. Castor, about 51 light-years away, turns out to be a system of six stars. Pluto, now classed as a dwarf planet, was discovered on photographs of this part of the sky.

Questions people ask

What are the Gemini dates?

The Sun is in Gemini from about 21 May to about 21 June, and the exact moments shift by up to a day with the year and the time zone. In 2026 it is there from 21 May 2026 at 00:37 UTC to 21 June 2026 at 08:25 UTC, and in 2027 from 21 May 2027 at 06:18 UTC to 21 June 2027 at 14:11 UTC.

What is the Gemini ruling planet?

The tradition gives Gemini to Mercury, and modern Western astrology keeps that assignment. Astrologers read Mercury as the planet of language and exchange, and they describe Gemini in the same terms. In the traditional scheme Mercury also rules Virgo.

What element is Gemini?

Gemini is an air sign, together with Libra and Aquarius. It is also a mutable sign, like Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces. The Sun passes through these four signs in the last month of each season.

Which signs are compatible with Gemini?

The tradition counts the other air signs, Libra and Aquarius, as the easiest matches, and the fire signs Aries and Leo as friendly ones. Sagittarius, the opposite sign, is read as a strong attraction between two curious people. Virgo and Pisces, the squares, are the pairings astrologers expect to bring the most friction.

Am I a Gemini if I was born on 21 May?

It depends on the year and the time of birth. In 2026 the Sun enters Gemini on 21 May 2026 at 00:37 UTC and in 2027 on 21 May 2027 at 06:18 UTC, so in those years a birth earlier on that day, in UTC terms, has the Sun in Taurus. In 2025 the entry came the day before, on 20 May 2025 at 18:55 UTC, so all of 21 May, in UTC, fell in Gemini.
