Libra is the seventh sign of the tropical zodiac, the thirty degrees that begin at the September equinox. Astrologers class it as an air sign of cardinal modality and give it Venus as ruler, the planet it shares with Taurus. Its emblem, a pair of scales, is the only one in the zodiac that is an object rather than a living figure.

This page is for people born with the Sun in Libra and for anyone who shares a home or an office with one. It treats the sky and the tradition separately: the times and positions are astronomical facts that can be checked, and the descriptions of temperament are what astrologers have said about the sign.

The sky

In 2026 the Sun entered Libra on 23 September 2026 at 00:05 UTC, the moment of the September equinox, and it leaves on 23 October 2026 at 09:38 UTC. In 2025 the equinox came on 22 September 2025 at 18:19 UTC, which in Sydney was already the early morning of 23 September. The cusp moves by some hours from year to year, and a leap year pulls it back.

Like every tropical sign, Libra is defined by the seasons, not by the constellation of the same name. The slow wobble of Earth's axis has moved the equinox point about 24 degrees against the stars since the zodiac was fixed, and the September equinox point now lies among the stars of Virgo. In the tradition, Libra's ruler is Venus. Venus is retrograde for about six weeks in October and November 2026, beginning in Scorpio and ending in Libra, the only such loop between 2025 and 2030 to touch the sign. Astrologers read such a period as a time to review relationships rather than begin them.

Character

Astrologers describe Libra as the sign most concerned with what happens between people. In this picture you notice quickly who has been left out of a conversation and bring that person in without making a point of it. When a train is late, you are likely to end up talking with the stranger beside you, and sometimes sharing a taxi.

The tradition links Libra's love of balance to a well-known difficulty with deciding. You can see the merit of both sides of an argument so clearly that choosing one feels unfair to the other. A paint color can take weeks, with sample squares drying on every wall, and you may write two openings for a letter and ask a friend which to keep. Once a choice is made, though, cardinal signs are said to act on it quickly.

Venus, the sign's ruler in the tradition, gives Libra a reputation for taste, and astrologers describe you as sensitive to ugliness in a room or in someone's manners. The same sensitivity applies to conflict. You tend to smooth over a disagreement before it has been fully aired, and the resentment can surface much later, in a calm voice. Libra does argue, in this account, but usually after trying every other route first.

Strengths

  • Fairness in disputes
  • Ease with strangers
  • An eye for design
  • Tact under tension

Blind spots

  • Slow decisions
  • Avoidance of open conflict
  • Reliance on approval

In love

Libra is the sign the tradition ties most closely to partnership, through the seventh house of the chart, which covers marriage and contracts. Astrologers describe you as feeling most like yourself in company and as enjoying courtship itself, the planned dinner and the long conversation afterward. Fairness matters here as much as anywhere, so you notice who called last and who chose the film, and you would like it to even out.

The tradition's warning is that Libra can stay too long in a relationship that has stopped working, because leaving feels harsher than enduring. You may also agree to plans you do not want in order to keep an evening pleasant, and then feel quietly overlooked. Astrologers expect the lasting partnerships to be those in which disagreement is spoken and settled rather than smoothed away.

At work

At work the tradition points Libra toward roles that depend on judgment between people, such as mediation, law, negotiation, human resources and design, or any job where a client has to be kept on side. You are said to turn a tense meeting into a useful one, mostly by making sure each person feels heard before anything is decided. Colleagues often bring you the email they are not sure how to word.

The weak point, astrologers say, is the unpopular decision. Choosing which supplier to drop or which colleague to promote can stall for days while you gather one more opinion. In the tradition's account Libra does best with a clear mandate, or with a partner who is comfortable delivering bad news, and worst in a workplace where rudeness passes for honesty.

The body

The tradition assigns Libra the kidneys and the lower back. The kidneys regulate the balance of water and salts in the body. Astrologers see that as a fitting match for the sign of the scales, and they read the lower back as the hinge on which the upper body balances. Like the rest of the old scheme that maps the signs from head to foot, it is a symbol and gives no guidance about anyone's health.

With other signs

Libra and Aries. Aries is Libra's opposite sign, and astrologers describe the pair as the self and the other. Aries acts first and explains later, which can feel rude to Libra, while Libra's habit of consulting everyone can feel like stalling to Aries. Each has something to teach the other about timing.

Libra and Gemini. Gemini is a fellow air sign, and the tradition sees the two as one of the easiest pairings. Conversation is the core of it, and the two can talk late into the night with topics to spare. The risk is that neither wants to make the dull practical decisions.

Libra and Capricorn. Capricorn stands at a square to Libra, and both are cardinal signs that like to set things in motion. Astrologers expect friction between Libra's wish to keep everyone content and Capricorn's readiness to disappoint people when necessary. The tradition also says Saturn, Capricorn's ruler, is exalted in Libra, which gives the pair common ground in rules and fairness.

The myth

For much of antiquity these stars were not a separate figure. Greek astronomers saw them as the claws of the neighboring Scorpion, and their old name, Chelae, means exactly that. Ptolemy still listed them that way. Babylonian astronomers, however, had already called the same stars the Scales, and in Roman times the balance became the usual picture.

The story most often attached to the scales is later and borrows from the neighboring Maiden. In it the scales belong to Astraea, the star maiden of justice, who lived among people in the golden age and was the last of the immortals to leave the earth as human violence grew. Ovid tells of her departure in the Metamorphoses, and later writers hung her scales in the sky beside her, between the Maiden and the Scorpion.

The constellation

Libra is faint, with no first-magnitude stars, so it is easiest to find between its neighbors, Spica in Virgo and red Antares in Scorpius. Its brightest star is Zubeneschamali, from the Arabic for the northern claw, and just behind it in brightness comes Zubenelgenubi, the southern claw, a wide double star that binoculars split easily. The names keep the old picture of the Scorpion's claws alive. From the northern hemisphere Libra is best seen on June evenings, low in the south.

Questions people ask

What are the Libra dates?

They shift by about a day with the year and the time zone, since Libra begins at the exact moment of the September equinox. In 2026 the Sun is in Libra from 23 September 2026 at 00:05 UTC to 23 October 2026 at 09:38 UTC, and in 2027 from 23 September 2027 at 06:02 UTC to 23 October 2027 at 15:33 UTC.

What is the Libra ruling planet?

In the tradition Libra is ruled by Venus, which also rules Taurus. Astrologers say Venus shows its social and aesthetic side in Libra and its sensual, material side in Taurus.

What element is Libra?

Libra is an air sign, together with Gemini and Aquarius. It is also one of the four cardinal signs, the signs that begin a season, and the tradition reads that combination as an active interest in how people get along.

Which signs are most compatible with Libra?

Astrologers usually name the other air signs, Gemini and Aquarius, as the easiest matches, with Leo and Sagittarius also favored because they sit two signs away. Cancer and Capricorn, which are square to Libra, are read as harder pairings, and Aries, the opposite sign, as a pull between independence and partnership.

Am I a Libra if I was born on 22 September?

It depends on the year and on the hour in UTC. In 2025 the equinox came on 22 September 2025 at 18:19 UTC, so births late that day in UTC were Libra, but in 2026 the Sun did not enter Libra until 23 September 2026 at 00:05 UTC, so all of 22 September in UTC was still Virgo.
